Kampung Batik Kauman is one of the oldest batik villages in Surakarta. Historically, Kauman Batik Village was used as the royal residence for the courtiers of the Kasunanan Palace, who have since helped preserve Surakarta's rich batik legacy. In contrast to batik made in other villages, the batik from Kauman expresses more classic Javanese motifs and uses dark earthy colors like brown and black. These were motifs worn exclusively by the members of Kasunanan Palace, which has a high artistic taste. Each pattern of traditional batik motifs has a socio-cultural meaning. The types include Sidomukti, Sidodrajat, Sidoluhur, Satrio Wibowo, Wahyu Temurun, and many more.
In addition to batik, Kauman Batik Village offers the utmost experience, such as live viewing of batik-making, attending any batik-making workshop, having a look at peachy collections of batik at their museums, or tasting truly Javanese cuisine at cafes there.
