Vastenburg Fort is one of the Dutch heritage sites built in the 18th century on the orders of Governor-General Baron Van Imhoff. Back then, this fort was utilized as the leading military defense network of the Dutch colonial government to oversee the Surakarta Hadiningrat Kasunanan Palace. Built-in six-meter-high brick wall with a deep and wide moat with a drawbridge linking it to the fort gate. Now all that was left was a narrow and shallow ditch. After gaining independence in 1945, this fort was used by the Indonesian military force for training.
In recent years, the fort was publicized as a cultural heritage site and now hosts many ceremonies and cultural events organized by both Surakarta's private and public sectors.
A great colonial-style building, Vastenburg Fort became an excellent destination for history buffs. Planted with enormous shady trees, visitors may enjoy the gentle wind blowing, leaving a peaceful feel in the soul.
